Identify the complete particle
Ask for the substrate, coating, colorant and any other relevant component information. A purchasing description should distinguish the base material from the finished glitter construction. Check that the information relates to the selected series and color rather than a different raw film. If the requested information is confidential, agree an appropriate disclosure route with the party responsible for your product assessment. Keep the final material code attached to every document request.
Ask what was tested and under which conditions
Request the full report or a traceable summary that identifies the specimen, test method, laboratory, dates and result. Ask whether the finished glitter or only a component was tested. Record the environment and conditions addressed by the test; do not expand its conclusion to an untested environment. If an environmental claim is proposed for your own packaging, write the exact wording first and check that the evidence supports that wording.
Understand the EU question before choosing a material
The European Commission explains that the microplastics restriction does not ban all glitter. The assessment depends on composition, intended use and how the material is supplied or incorporated. Its guidance distinguishes certain loose plastic glitter uses from uses with transitional periods or derogations. For an EU-bound project, ask the responsible compliance specialist to evaluate the exact material and application against the current restriction. A supplier’s biodegradable label is not, by itself, that assessment.
Keep environmental evidence and application trials separate
Environmental documentation does not answer whether a glitter will perform in your formulation. Plan a second review for appearance, mixing, exposure and storage conditions. Test the selected grade in the actual binder and retain an approved panel. If a candidate changes the visual effect or handling requirements, document that change before accepting a substitution. This allows design, purchasing and compliance teams to make their decisions using the same material reference.
Build a compact evidence register
A useful register links each proposed claim to a specific file and material. Add an owner for unresolved questions and a review date. If a document does not match the selected color or finished construction, ask the supplier to explain its applicability. Do not fill a gap with an assumption based on a similar product name.
- Selected material code and complete construction information.
- Tested specimen, method, conditions and report identification.
- Exact proposed claim and the market where it will be used.
- Application trial result and the party responsible for the market assessment.
Approve claims as carefully as appearance
Before a bulk order, make sure the approved sample, specification and evidence register refer to the same material. Confirm what will happen if a component or manufacturing step changes. Keep public wording specific to the evidence you hold and avoid adding broader claims during translation or design.
