The buyer’s working brief

A beautiful finish.
A clear specification.

From wash-tested garment decoration to a deep, sparkling resin table: begin with what the finished product needs to do. Use these industry briefs to prepare your material, document and sample review.

Four questions behind every material choice.

01

Use & market

Who will use the product, where will it be sold and what conditions will it encounter?

02

Batch reference

Which colour, particle size, thickness and finish define the approved sample?

03

Process fit

Which binder, temperature, solvent exposure and equipment must the particle work with?

04

Evidence & traceability

Which reports match the selected grade, and how will samples and trial results be recorded?

Toys & children’s craft kits

Particle retention, age group and the finished toy.

A decorative component needs to be evaluated as part of the complete toy or kit. Define the intended age group, accessible surfaces and how the child will use the item before choosing a colour or cut.

Documents to request

  • Selected-grade SDS, composition and particle specification.
  • Relevant element-migration, lead and phthalate reports: review EN 71-3, ASTM F963 and CPSIA requirements with the responsible product assessor.
  • The finished-product testing and certification file for the intended market; component reports are supporting evidence.

Agree the acceptance checks

  • Agree a retention test for the actual adhesive or binder, including rubbing and foreseeable handling.
  • Inspect cut edges and oversized particles; assess the finished construction for the intended users.
  • Record colour, size distribution, sample code and agreed acceptance limits for repeat batches.

A report for glitter alone does not certify a toy. The manufacturer or importer must establish the finished-product requirements.

Nail & beauty development

Exact ingredient identity, use area and formula compatibility.

Start with the complete particle construction and intended area of use. A nail coating, face product and eye-area product need separate assessment; a decorative finish name cannot establish cosmetic suitability.

Documents to request

  • Current SDS and full composition or ingredient information for the selected grade, including substrate and colour layers.
  • The assessor’s required substance, impurity and microbiological evidence, matched to the product and market.
  • Selected-grade compatibility records and batch colour/particle specifications.

Agree the acceptance checks

  • Test the actual nail base or cosmetic formulation through mixing, storage and the full cure.
  • Agree colour-bleed, particle-edge, application-feel and finish criteria; assess handling and dust control.
  • Review the allowed uses of each colour additive for the intended market and body area.

No blanket “cosmetic grade”, eye-safe, lip-safe or FDA-approved claim is made for these collections. Additional evidence must be confirmed for the selected grade.

Scope reference: FDA colour additives and cosmetics

Textile printing & garment decoration

Wash durability, flexibility and the actual heat-transfer cycle.

The finish must work with the fabric, adhesive and transfer process together. Send the fabric construction, decoration method and care instructions, rather than selecting a grade from colour alone.

Documents to request

  • Grade specification and SDS, including particle dimensions and thickness as separate values.
  • The buyer’s restricted-substance list and relevant azo, formaldehyde or element test requirements.
  • Wash, dry/wet rub, flex and heat-cycle trial records; confirm any buyer-requested OEKO-TEX documentation and its precise scope.

Agree the acceptance checks

  • Run the actual press temperature, dwell time and pressure on the intended fabric.
  • Check shedding, cracking, rub transfer, colour and hand feel after the agreed wash programme.
  • Keep an approved decorated fabric and identified loose sample for repeat-order comparison.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 is a textile testing/certification scheme; no XUCAI OEKO-TEX certificate has been established from the supplied files.

Packaging & printed decoration

Clean detail, adhesion and the converted pack.

Check the decoration on the actual paper or board after printing, coating, drying and converting. A beautiful flat sample still needs to survive folding, stacking and handling.

Documents to request

  • Grade SDS, colour/cut specification and relevant substance reports.
  • Adhesive or ink compatibility and cure trial record for the proposed construction.
  • Buyer-specific packaging requirements, including a separate assessment if food contact is relevant.

Agree the acceptance checks

  • Match the particle dimensions to screen openings, coating gaps and the smallest artwork details.
  • Agree rub-off, tape adhesion and transfer checks after drying and folding.
  • Compare colour and sparkle on the final printed background under agreed lighting.

For plant-fiber grades, confirm moisture exposure and application instructions. A water-degradable material name does not establish compatibility with premixed water-based inks.

  • Make a small trial using the production resin and the intended process window.
  • Inspect colour change, distortion, agglomeration, flow marks and visible particle distribution.
  • Agree migration or surface-transfer checks where relevant to the end use.

Do not apply one temperature rating to all PET, PLA, plant-fiber or aluminium grades. No universal high-temperature capability is established here.

Automotive paint & decorative coatings

A stable flake effect through application and cure.

For custom automotive finishes, compare the flake orientation, sparkle and film build on a curved coated panel. Floor coatings, grout and architectural finishes need their own binder, wear and exposure checks.

Documents to request

  • Selected-grade SDS, particle specification and binder/solvent compatibility information.
  • A panel trial record covering basecoat, glitter layer, clearcoat and the full cure.
  • For exterior use, agreed weathering and UV evidence for the complete coating system.

Agree the acceptance checks

  • Review particle size against the spray nozzle, screen or application equipment and required film thickness.
  • Assess soak stability, settling, colour bleed, adhesion and appearance after curing.
  • Agree abrasion, cleaning and exposure tests around the intended surface and service conditions.

The application image illustrates a finish direction. It is not evidence of an automotive approval or a multi-year outdoor lifetime for a XUCAI grade.
